Robert C. Apuy, D.D.S.
Not many children have to learn to overcome adversity at a young age the way Dr. Robert Apuy had to. He was born in the Southern part of China two weeks before the communist regime took over. His family fled to safety to Macao, a Portuguese colony. He and his siblings would live there for 10 years with their grandmother as his parents worked to start a new life elsewhere. From this trying time, Dr. Apuy learned determination and developed a strong work ethic.
Dr. Apuy came to the United States and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology from Loma Linda University. He was accepted into Loma Linda University's School of Dentistry and was part of the three-year accelerated program. Because foreign students could not get financial aid or loans, he worked as a medical technologist whenever he could in order to pay for dental school. He married Pearl, a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, at the end of his freshman year. Together, they were able to pay the bills and graduate debt free.
Dr. Apuy completed a mini-residency for TMJ dysfunction at the University of San Diego Medical Center, and a mini-residency in dental implants. He was also able to get advanced training in oral surgery and I.V. sedation. Despite having to work as much as possible to pay for school, Dr. Apuy finished dental school early and was able to pass his California State Dental Board ahead of schedule. This enabled him to teach as a clinical and laboratory instructor his last quarter.
He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in December 1978 and began practicing dentistry in January 1979, as one of only two dentists using IV conscious sedation.
In 2010, Dr. Apuy was able to move into his new state-of-the-art facility that is equipped with the most advanced technology, including high definition digital radiography, the CEREC system for same-day crowns, and 3D cone beam technology for implants and other oral surgery procedures.
He takes more than the required continuing education classes each year to stay on-the-cutting-edge of advancements in dentistry. Dr. Apuy also maintains membership in professional organizations including the American Dental Association, California Dental Association, American Association of Clinical Pathology, American Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, Member of the California Board of Dental Examiners, and the Fresno Madera Dental Society where is often gives case presentations at their study club.
Dr. Apuy has volunteered as an adjunct professor as part of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry's service learning, and has taken students on overseas mission trips to China, Honduras, and Nicaragua. He is fluent in Chinese, Spanish and English.
Dr. Apuy is proud to have his children follow in his footsteps; his son, Christopher, is in practice with him and his daughter, Heidi, is a pediatric dentist in Oregon. When he is not at the office, Dr. Apuy enjoys fishing, cooking, bike riding, and spending time with his family.
